In high school and college in the late 1970s and early 1980s, I hung out with Alpha men without disabilities. Authority is a mysterious force field that magnifies the strengths and weaknesses of a leader. It’s granted no matter the quality of someone’s leadership skills or the depth of their experience. Once a baby is born, its parents gain authority over him or her regardless of their skills or experience as parents. We confer authority onto teachers, bosses, politicians, law enforcement officers, medical professionals, religious leaders, and others hoping that they will use their authority wisely.
