While watching an Elite Eight game of the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament between Duke and Kansas at around 7 PM on a recent Sunday evening, I received an e-mail from my mom telling me that a friend of hers was annoyed because the game had caused the broadcast of the “60 Minutes” interview between Stormy Daniels and Anderson Cooper to be delayed. During a commercial break, I shot back a reply asking if she remembered the Heidi game.
Because I…..
Near the start of a ten-day training program about five years ago, Graham, a lead instructor, paired me with Heath. Young, powerfully built, and low to the ground, Heath had many of the characteristics of a promising football running back. Great vision. Exceptional quickness and agility. Outstanding acceleration and speed. Wonderful durability and strength. Good team player with a personality similar to Danny Kanel, retired quarterback and current ESPN analyst.
After the program, Heath and I remained in close contact,…..
I never have been much of a boxing fan, preferring team sports. And I don’t remember much about Cassius Clay’s early boxing exploits.
While in elementary school, however, I vaguely recall my dad admiring Clay’s prowess but not quite sure what to make of his pre-fight chatter. I also remember watching one of Clay’s conquests on TV with Dad and a couple of other men; the fight didn’t last long.
Then came the name change. “Cassius” sounded strange, but the…..
About a week ago, the Leicester City Foxes clinched Britain soccer’s Premier League title, rising from the bottom of the league to champion in a year, defying 5000-to-1 odds. Understandably, ESPN Radio’s coverage of this rags-to-riches event was muted. While voicing dislike of soccer conveys an aura of contempt for the rest of the world, professional soccer has still not gained a true foothold in the United States sports scene, even after more than 45 years of effort.
However, the…..
“Cam Newton acted like a real punk,” a friend texted me shortly after the Super Bowl. “Wearing a hoodie and giving one-word answers to reporters, and then walking out.”
I cringed inwardly, remembering the connection between “hoodie” and Trayvon Martin’s death by wannabe cop.
“Haven’t seen the interview,” I texted back. “Reminds me of Trump.”
Shortly afterward, I heard a replay of the interview, and Cam Newton did come across as distant and brusque. I couldn’t help wondering, however, how…..
Last Sunday morning, I woke up to the chatter on ESPN radio about the turning point of the second playoff game between the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers. the Dodgers’ Chase Utley broke the Mets’ Ruben Tejada’s leg while successfully preventing the completion of a double play, resulting in a four-run rally. The Dodgers won; Tejada was lost for the rest of the season; and I was blearily upset, in part because I’m a Mets fan.

“Joseph will never make it as an athlete,” a sixth-grade coach told my wife, Lisa, and me. “He’s too uncoordinated.”
Last Wednesday afternoon, Joseph, my stepson, signed a letter committing him to play college football at Missouri Western, a division II powerhouse.
Joseph’s journey from uncoordinated klutz to one of the seven percent of high school football players who receive a scholarship to play college football began with a stint on an elite football team in Columbia, Missouri while he…..
I’m probably the only sports fan and regular listener to ESPN who can’t remember hearing Stuart Scott in action. Why? Because Mr. Scott did his thing on ESPN television and I listened to ESPN radio.
But, beginning on January 4, 2015, the day that Stuart Scott died, his colleagues spoke with smiles in their voices about how their differing backgrounds and influences caused communication glitches during their SportsCenter broadcasts. Others spoke of how his response to his long battle with…..
I have been a fan of the Boston Red Sox since 1965. My dad was a rabid Red Sox fan since fleeing from Germany in 1936 to do graduate work at Harvard University. “You must root for the Red Sox and hate the Yankees,” people advised him when he arrived, and he taught me well.
In 1965 and 1966, the New York Yankees and Red Sox were both terrible, so I happily chortled when the Yankees frequently lost and was…..
